Is DSL a Good Fit for your Company?

Despite the obvious speed, security and convenience benefits of DSL, there are a number of issues to consider before deciding whether DSL is right for your needs.

Distance

DSL is sensitive to distance, and therefore not available in all areas. As the connection length increases, the signal quality and speed decrease. 18,000 feet (about 3.5 miles) is the maximum serving distance from the Central Office.

Type of Connection

There is also the issue of the different flavors DSL are offered in, such as ADSL, HDSL, SDSL, etc. Which one is right for you depends on your needs. One will limit or have different upload and download speeds, while the other will have the same upload as download.

Reliability

Another issue, of course, is reliability. As more DSL providers come on line, complaints about spotty service and recurring outages have become common.

With all that said, DSL can be a great fit for some companies. If your business is using the Internet primarily for emails and web surfing, then DSL may be a great fit for your company, but if your company is using the net in a “mission critical” fashion, such as hosting your own web servers or mail servers and many file transfers, then a dedicated connection (fractional point to point T-1) is definitely in order. Sometimes DSL can replace expensive multi-state Wide Area Networks using VPN (Virtual Private Network).

Aeneas is dedicated to helping you find the best solution for your business, and because DSL is a service we will offer in conjunction with many other services, we are not biased in selling you a certain product or service. We want to make sure you get exactly what your company needs in order to be secure, reliable, and successful.
