Policies > Domain Name Transfer

The process for transferring a domain is relatively simple. If you’re trying to transfer an existing domain to a new provider, you’ll need to initiate a transfer request from your new provider as described below.

  • Create an account with your new provider.
  • Tell the new provider that you have a domain you want to transfer. Usually during the sign-up process you’ll have the option of deciding if you want to register a new domain or transfer an existing one.
  • Your new provider will request the domain from the administrative contact person listed on the domain registration. To see who your administrative contact person is, you can visit http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp to do a “whois” search on the domain.
  • As a security precaution, we suggest that you contact your administrative contact to let them know you’re switching providers. If they haven’t been informed of the switch, they may ignore the transfer request to protect your domain from being transferred without your knowledge.
  • Once the request is made by the new provider, the administrative contact will release it. If Aeneas is listed as your administrative contact, we will release the domain to the new provider. The transfer can take anywhere from 3-7 business days to go through.
NOTE: Your domain is a key component to the function of your website and any domain based e-mail services you may have (ex. username@yourdomain.com). Be sure that your website and e-mail accounts are established properly in advance of your domain transfer and that your new DNS host is set up to correctly direct services to your web and mail server hosts. This will avoid any e-mail or website downtime after a switch.
